As a team sport, football should encourage players to form a bond and shape them into one, well knitted and coordinated unit – both in terms of performing on the pitch and in life in general. However, this perfect image does not always withstand the challenges of reality. Commercialized to the limit, modern football often witnesses dramatic, brutal antagonisms between competing players of the same team, when the spot in the top 11 is at stake. Is there any other way?
The laureate of this year’s Football Goats shows there is, indeed. All you have to do – difficult as it is – is to discover there are far more important things in life then getting on the field, scoring or not scoring goals… And the young heroes of the awarded film manage to do so.
Football Goats 2019 goes to Too Far Away (‘Zu Weit Weg’) directed by Sarah Winkenstette, for the optimistic story of how a conflict on the football pitch can turn into a real friendship.
