In a family setting: Julia Szmyt (Krych, 34 years old, director, screenwriter, mother), Bruno Krych (11 years old, young creator, son) and Hugo Krych (8 years old, young creator, son) invite you to their workshop on making films with a mobile phone. The series of workshops will comprise 3 how-to videos.
The workshops are meant for young people from 11 years of age.
A FILM ABOUT A FILM
a how-to video for workshop participants
concept: Julia Szmyt
We will create 3 episodes, each lasting about 10-15 minutes.
In each episode:
- we will discuss the stages of making a film, building on the knowledge gained, as well as our own experiences,
- we will present the stages of working on a short film shot with a mobile phone, created specifically for the workshop.
The FIRST EPISODE will focus on the script, cast and work plan; the SECOND EPISODE will focus on the scenography and costume design, as well as the work of the director and actors; the THIRD ONE will discuss the film set and editing.
The narration will be adjusted to the age of the workshop’s participants and to the form of the mobile-phone-shot film. We will address each stage (script writing, cast, work plan, scenography and costume design, etc.), which means we will tell you how it looks like in a professional production and place it in the context of making a film with a mobile phone.
For example, when talking about scenography and costumes, we will focus on how you can arrange space with what is available in your home environment – in other words, which corner of the room to choose and why this one is better than the other ones, or how the actor’s outfit – a hoodie instead of a jacket – can influence the viewer’s perception of the character. We will try to demonstrate the importance of thinking about building meanings when making a film.
A mobile-phone-shot film will be created specifically for the workshops and will be our joint work. Together with Bruno and Hugo, we will write the screenplay, design the scenography and costumes, and choose music. The boys will act in the film and edit it, and I will direct it. The film will be made
without any professional equipment, using a mobile phone only, and will be presented at the end of the last session of the workshops.
I consider the participation of Bruno and Hugo in the creation of the workshops very important and very interesting – the boys make films and theatre plays themselves, they know how to edit films and write scripts. They are about the age of the workshop participants, so their taking part in the project will naturally verify any issues that may be of interest to their peers.
