Under the pretext of wanting to take the IELTS exam, 16-year-old Yasi arrives in Tehran. The purpose of her journey, however, is not a language test but an illegal abortion procedure.
Film expert recommends
Basically, we can talk about independent cinema from Iran. In her 24-minute feature, the director tells a very powerful story about the abortion underground in the country. A teenage girl trapped in an oppressive, extremely patriarchal society tries to fight for herself. Subtle psychology adjoins naturalism, emotions run high, but it is to Sotoodeh’s credit that she does not use the language of cinematic agitation, but a nuanced psychology accompanied by a concern for the realism of the situation and the world depicted.
