14-year-old Ana lives with her father in Buenos Aires. She has a metal plate in her arm, a reminder of a childhood accident. During winter break, the object in her body starts to pulse. She believes these vibrations are words encrypted using Morse code.
Film expert recommends
The feature debut of a young Argentine director, hitherto known for her work as a producer and two shorts. Pokropek is yet another new and promising voice of a cinematography that in recent years has given the world such artistic talents as Martina Gusmán, Lola Arias, Mariano Llinás and the greatest of them all, Pablo Trapero, among others. In a country of vast spaces and a large metropolis, a turbulent past and the very bitter political and social last few decades, the director does not focus on communal problems, but creates a fairytale coming-of-age story. Her film is not even so much an urban fantasy, but rather a psychologically subtle metaphor for loneliness and longing for someone who is no longer there. Pokropek, while building an emotional portrait of a teenage girl entering adulthood, adds a wonderful backdrop to it – a picture of a universe in which small and individual things get their proper place and proportions. Time will tell whether the director is closer to a poet of cinema or perhaps an expert in human psychology. In Major Tones, she freely combines both – nomen omen – tones.
