Dan is a young man who spends a lot of time in his flat. His routine is always accompanied by electronic music coming from his headphones. However, when he goes outside, he feels disconnected from the world around him and only finds solace in clubs. Techno music and drugs transport him to a world where he can be himself and feel free. One day he encounters the gaze of a young child on the street, which changes his perception of the reality around him.
Film expert recommends
Another award-winning animation by a young Berliner working mainly in Switzerland. Patthey, who admits to being inspired by The Art. Brut in his work, seems to make bold use of this aesthetic in the 15-minute Without a Voice. His consciously sloppy, trashy, pretend-primitive line work captures well the world of the film’s protagonist, living to the rhythm of pulsating techno, aided by stimulants and connected to reality only by electronic and industrial music. The rhythmic piece is reminiscent of a music video of unusual length, but at the same time it has a vestigial plot, well reflecting a metropolitan and alienated existence.
