Seventeen-year-old Lot, a girl passionate about diving, loses her sight after an unfortunate fireworks accident. Her life will never be the same again: she ends up in a rehabilitation centre where she must learn how to function in everyday life. Lot cannot come to terms with her new reality and tries to deny what has become part of her experience. Yet reality is relentless, and the path toward acceptance is not an easy one. Fortunately, the teenager meets people who, in different ways, make this journey into the unknown a little more bearable.

“I Shall See” is the feature debut of Mercedes Stalenhoef, which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Told in a meditative tone, the film makes brilliant use of cinematic tools to help viewers deeply empathise with the protagonist’s psychological states. The carefully considered camera work and meticulous attention to sound perfectly convey the transformation taking place in her life. It is a moving story about mourning a lost life and broken dreams.
