Ki-jun’s family moves to a local village as part of a new city development plan. During his adjustment to the new school, his trainers go missing. The suspects are the brothers from the neighbouring family. A tense story about finding one’s place in a new environment, while also serving as a bitter commentary on social inequalities in South Korea.

When This Summer Ends, dir. Jang Byung-ki (South Korea, 2024). The director’s feature debut, which immediately secured a strong position on the South Korean independent cinema scene. The story of a boy who moves with his mother out of the metropolis so she can develop her career in new provincial surroundings is emblematic of this cinema.

Issues such as social stratification, lack of proper care for minors, and the resulting violence and crime are dressed here in the costume of a coming-of-age drama. Jang’s film stands out by relying not on dramatic events, but on the expressive power of youthful acting, psychological and emotional truth, and references to values such as dignity, honour, and resilience in everyday life — all the more valuable because they belong to young people who had to learn them on their own.
