Jonas and Daan search for Karsten, who may know something about their classmate’s recent disappearance. The boys share a memorable day filled with joy, awkward moments, and dark secrets. A visually stunning, suspenseful story based on the comic of the same title.
Film expert recommends
The third feature film in the oeuvre of the Dutch director and comic book writer, who in his earlier works (for adults), dealt with themes of crime and prostitution. This time he based his film on his own graphic novel, referring at its starting point to the 1974 World Cup final lost by the Dutch to Germany, the same final at which the Polish national team turned out to be the best in our history. Van Driel (born 1962) probably refers to his own experiences as a twelve-year-old from this period. His black and white piece focuses strongly on the details, the well-defined material, social, and cultural background. But also on the characters, their difficult friendship and, in the end, the loss of innocence. There is a nod to contemporary neorealism in the style of Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma (2018) and an equally masterful, albeit on a smaller scale, portrait of childhood among peers and adults. If anyone would like to convince themselves of van Driel’s talent and comics workshop, they can look at his several hundred-page work published in Poland – ‘IHS – In Hollandia Suburbia’. All the passions and poetics of this author converge there.
