Film Expert Recommends
The Dance of the Foxes (Le danse des renards), dir. Valéry Carnoy (France-Belgium, 2025). The feature debut of a young Belgian filmmaker, previously known mainly for the short film Titan (2020). In The Dance of the Foxes, the director portrays the world of young boxers, but the sports film is merely a starting point. Yes, we get testosterone-driven cinema, with a fair share of violence, rituals typical of young men, both feigned and genuine machismo, and so on. However, behind this facade lies another story — essentially post-traumatic — about reevaluating values and relationships with oneself and others. Physical, bodily cinema meets psychological depth; aggression blends with sensitivity; masculinity with an underrated femininity. The realism and naturalistic acting in this film are typical of French and Belgian cinema, two closely related traditions whose collaboration consistently yields outstanding results.
